Would You Turn in a Trucker if You Caught Him Filling Up With Farm Diesel?

Yesterday I pulled up to the farm diesel pump to get 5 gallons to put in my can for my farm tractor. An 18 wheeler was parked between two pumps, using road diesel to fill his left tank, and using the farm diesel pump to fill his right tank. What I find amazing is that these guys can be easily caught by DOT, and the penalties involve incredibly high fines. Knowing that is illegal for commercial trucks to use farm diesel, would you report the trucker?
For the one calling me a rat, and the other wanting to know what I did, I did not make a report. I drove to another station and got my fuel. All I did was ask what *you* would do.
moms, I got all that info. I know the trucking co. They’re local guys, they own about 6 trucks. And I’m well acquainted with the family. I’m just in a bit of a moral dilemma…turn in some old friends, and do the right thing? Or ignore the matter and pretend it didn’t happen?
…pitbull, I *do* know the circumstances of the truck. I’ve been involved in the trucking industry for over 10 years in this small town, and I know their use of farm diesel in this circumstance was illegal.

As an owner of a trucking company that is a road company, I would kill my drivers for doing such a thing, however, you don’t know the circumstances of that particular truck, so NO I would not report them.

Besides if that particular truck was NOT a farm truck he is taking a big chance of getting himself and his companies in trouble. He will eventually get caught.

Let him take his chances. If he gets caught he wont ever be filling up with farm/off road diesel again. The only real difference between the 2 is the ppm of sulfer, and the lubricating properties (as well as the obvious dye). I wouldnt worry too much about it. If he wants to risk his job then let him, its his own business.

farm diesel can be used in commercial vehicles in certain instances… according to the law. So no, I wouldn’t turn him in unless I knew for sure that a law was broken.

The only way you could turn this person in is to make sure you have the trucking company name and the actual number of the vehicle. It’s on the side of the truck or at least get the trailer number and remember the location and time. It’s most likely that this guy is an independant contractor and isn’t with a particular company. You can call the DOT and ask them about this. I think it’s worth asking about. I would call them…and I was a truck driver for 20 yrs. You are not a rat! You are someone who actually cares. I like that.

Don`t be so quick to jump to conclusions…for some road trucks it is legal to use `farm` or `red` diesel to run ancillery motors and equipment…`fridges, donkey engines, cranes. With the prices of u.k. road diesel to-day and many of the foreign trucks running on non-uk fuel with their governments subsidising their journeys when running unloaded, and not having road tax to pay..these days,How can u.k.truck firms compete? No,I wouldn`t report the trucker.I`d feel sorry for him having to do it.
