Questions About Being a Farmer?

Alright so Ive grown up in the city my whole life. I hate it here and have wanted to move to rural minnesota since I was 10. So Ive decided I want to be a Conservation Officer. I also have always wanted to be a farmer and I plan on being one. So my questions are:

1. Can you be a part time farmer?

2. How many acres of corn would I have to plant to at least pay of the fertilizer, tractor and tractor equipment and seeds. I wanna do this cause I have always thought of farming as fun and I wanna do it for fun and not all about profit.

3. Can I grow feed corn one year, and then grow sweet corn the next or do I have to keep it the same each year?

4. Can corn be grown in Northern Minnesota (St. Louis County)?

When our country was settled almost every one was a farmer. So, I guess that is the reason most people are fascinated with the idea of being a farmer. You can be a part time farmer. But land and equipment take a huge layout of money. You could rent some land and rent equipment and try your hand at it before investing in land, etc. Take the advise of the answerer who said to talk to local farmers. Farming can be profitable, but you can also lose your pants. There is a joke among farmers in my area. One says to another farmer, what would you do if you won the lottery? The other says,I’d just keep on farming until it was all gone.

I would find out if Minnesota has a department of agriculture or a University that teaches agriculture and ask them also if you can find any farmers in your area talk to them.

I got out of farming because it was hard work and the income was rather poor. It also took a lot of money to get land and tools. Crops need to be rotated. You do not plant corn year after year. It will deplete the soil of minerals. Check with your local agricultural department. They can give you very good pointers.
