"Milo"?…haven’t heard that term for Sorghum since I was a kid some 40 years ago…I suggest you start by looking it up on "Wikipedia" as that will give you good start as to its history and uses etc. but for the actual methods used to cultivate Sorghum then I would suggest your relevant Dept. of Agriculture can help their ie USDA in the United States…Dept. of Primary Industries in Australia or Ministry of Agriculture in Great Britain and these site will help to answer the others questions you may have on wheat production and cattle raising.
"3’4 me" I have to assume is again short hand for a 3 inch by 4 inch piece of sawn timber and in this context is being used as slang ie "Well you could have hit me with a 3 by 4."
