Farm Tractor Drive Line
Which would be the greater challenge? UK – USA charity event.?
I’ve been thinking for some time of a way to raise funds for a national heart charity, and it involves driving a vintage/classic farm tractor over an epic journey.
Asside from the logistics of getting a tractor from UK to USA, which would make the greater and more interesitng challenge;
A drive to circumnavigate the UK coast line – beginning and ending in Kingston upon Hull, East Yorks.
or,
A drive from “sea to shining sea” – New York to San Francisco, 3000 miles from coast to coast.
Which one would you go for?
I would choose the USA option rather than the UK one.
1. The length of the UK coastline is approx 11000 miles compared to the 3000 miles from NY to SF. But the trans-USA journey is probably perceived by most people as being a more impressive and epic journey.
2. It would probably be more of an adventure for yourself.
3. You would get more publicity and hence raise more money from both the UK and US media. I would exploit your Britishness and age in the US along the lines of “eccentic, vintage British woman with a big heart is driving a vintage tractor on an epic road trip from coast to coast”.
In the US, I would stress that even though it’s a UK charity it funds research that would ultimately benefit US citizens too. Or raise funds for a US heart charity too.
Regarding the logistics, I would buy a tractor in the US rather than ship a tractor from here. This would be far cheaper and could be sold at the end of the trip. I know a friend that is planning on shipping a double decker bus to the US and another that is buying one there. You’d be surprised at the bargains that can be found on ebay and craigslist, especially with the strength of the £:$.
